L&DMRC – CLUB & MEMBERS LAYOUTS with availability for exhibitions

Although a relatively small club, its membership is active in a wide range of model railway scales and interests.

The current list of layouts, together with their details are being added progressively to this web site, as a help to exhibition managers in establishing potential invites.

Being small in number, does mean that we are limited to the number of exhibitions per year that members or club layouts can attend. The distance from our base near Liphook, on the Hampshire/West Sussex/ Surrey borders is usually restricted  to a  50 miles radius.

For club layouts, club members have, due to the spiralling cost of fuel, to claim actual fuel costs but the club quotes expenses at the time of booking which includes a small donation to club funds. We increasingly design our layouts to be transported in members cars, so do avoid van hire.

For members layouts, arrangements as specified by the layout owner.  If help is given by other members, the layout owner invariably makes a donation to the club.

If  provisionally booking one of our layouts, either club or members, please in the first instance, contact our secretary by e-mail  (see contacts page). Written confirmations must be received by our secretary a minimum of 8 clear weeks before the event, so that all arrangements can be made at our end. We for our part, will confirm promptly, in writing the club’s acceptance.

MEMBERS’ LAYOUTS

Weyford on Sea- now  renamed Sandbourne - 1:76 (00)-

This layout was formerly a club layout but has now been sold  to a club member, and is being modified to fit into its new home.  The description  that follows includes  the planned revisions. Although not impossible to take to an exhibition, it will be a major endeavour involving the whole membership. The owner and the club will not be offering  the layout for exhibition  because of the amount of work to be carried out.

Southern Railway/ BR (Southern Region) in era 1940′s to 1950′s Hampshire  seaside terminus with branch to Docks, fictionally located to the west of Weymouth.

The layout has been extensively remodelled, since its first showing at Midhurst Modellers Show in 2005, from an L shaped terminus to fiddle yard layout, then to a U shaped terminus to the fiddle yard,  hidden behind the Docks station and is now being further altered and will  include the following features

The main station, is in the Southern Art-Deco style with 4 platform faces, a small goods yard and an M.P.D with turntable. The engine shed may be changed to a type similar to Templecombe.

Several buildings originally on Weyford have been retained by the club and the new location of the layout has meant that further work is required both scenically and electrically. A new station buildings arrangement is currently being designed together with a new town scenic section.

The Docks is  connected to the main station by a branch line modelled with cranes and ships; a ships passenger terminal for cross channel services and a B.O.A.C flying boat terminal are under design or construction

A simple halt will be added on the docks branch, to serve  Prince Albert Cliffs a local beauty spot popular with walkers

Addition of tram system to serve town and seaside promenade.

The layout has considerable operating potential, with summer passenger services, boat and flying- boat trains, tomato and potato traffic from the Channel Islands; holiday luggage in advance;  summer excursion trains from the Midlands via the Somerset and Dorset line.

Club members will have access to this layout four times a year for operating sessions, commencing at the end of 2012.

We will consider issuing invites to other local clubs or individuals to view operating sessions once the layout is “up to scratch”. These events will be limited to say 3 a year and there will be a limit of four visitors at one time, due to limited space in the building and limited car parking. A donation to a local charity may be requested.

Japanese outline modern image

The layout has been revised to showcase modern image Japanese trains in a wide range of types and liveries.

The stock comes from all the major Japanese manufacturers and covers high speed to suburban types plus the colourful container trains.

MEMBER’S  LAYOUT

SOLTENDIECK 1:45  (European O Gauge)

Set at a small fictional wayside station, now finding itself on the West German/ East German border  at the height of the cold war.  As a result of the partition post 1949, the once through line has been arbitrarily cut by the East German border fence. No alterations have been made to the track layout, but the line still serves the station and a grocery company’s warehouse  and acts as a rail head for a nearby BAOR base.

This leads to some interesting shunting moves under the watchful eye of the East German observation tower. (There are only 3 points)

Soltendieck is a real place in Northern Germany, in what at this time was the British Zone, on a line that was actually split, albeit some kilometres away.. The layout is operated on the Lenz DCC system with Lenz stock and is based on a plan from the late Carl Arendt web site on small layouts,  submitted by Alexander Kaczmarek from Berlin.

Size: 2400 X 720

Travels in one car with operators

Insurance value. Layout: £750 Stock: £2000

Will be shown in constructional state at 2011 club open day.

Not available for exhibition until 2013 season

CLUB LAYOUT

WOODCHURCH 1:43.5  (O)

The layout was mainly constructed by the late Alf Rolph, a long time member of the club, with Martin Hill our present Chairman, as a through station with two fiddle yards and on the rare occasions it could be erected was over 40 feet long. After 5 years in less than ideal storage conditions the layout was found to be in a good state and there are now plans to convert to a terminus to fiddle yard.

The location was originally identified as being on the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton line on the Berkshire/ Hampshire border although this may have to be revised in its change to a terminus.

Size: 8500 x 1000 Travels in two cars with operators

Insurance Value:    Layout:£2000  Stock: £5000 (owned by members)

Hoped to be available for showing at our open day 2011 in operable but incomplete state.

Not available for exhibition until 2012/3 season.
