Liphook and District MRC to exhibit at Midhurst Modellers Show in February 2008

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

After three years presenting a new club layout at each annual show, for 2008, one of our members, Ben, will be exhibiting a new N scale layout set in the German Alps .

“Vierbrucken” (Four Bridges) is a multi-layered continuous circuit layout with a small station, and many tunnels and spectacular bridges and scenery.

Ben, who is relatively new to railway modelling, has created for his first layout a spectacular exhibit, which we hope will please all who see it at the Midhurst Show. ( See Vierbrucken post for details)

The club will also be manning a table to encourage local railway modellers to visit our long established local club and perhaps become members. We shall also be showing examples of members work, both completed and in progress.

The exhibition will be held at The Grange Leisure Centre, Bepton Road, Midhurst, West Sussex GU29 9HD

on Sunday 24th February 2008. Full details will appear in the major model railway magazines and local press in the coming weeks.

As a regular exhibitor at this exhibition, the club looks forward to welcoming local railway modellers and boys and girls of all ages, to see Vierbrucken and all the many other layouts and exhibits at the show.

West Bay has succesful outing to Farnham and District MRC 2007 Show

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

At its first exhibition outing, West Bay performed well and Graham’s sequence kept any wayward operators in line. Any difficulties experienced were mainly operator failure!

Interest was expressed by a few visiting exhibition managers, so further outings in 2008 and 2009 might be on the cards.

The Petersfield Post were sent a small piece for Wednesday 10th Oct and details were included in that edition. Following a request a picture of the exhibition team was submitted on Sunday 14th for hopefully inclusion in the edition appearing 17th Oct.

N- Gauge Cottleston Park to appear at Lancing exhibition

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

In what is turning out to be a busy period for Liphook club members’, Cottleston Park is to appear at the one day “All Gauges Exhibition” staged by the N-Gauge Society’s West Sussex Area Group on Saturday 17th November 2007 at Lancing Parish Halls, South Street, LANCING, West Sussex. BN15 8AJ.

The layout will be operated by members of the Liphook and District MRC N gauge team, who built the layout, plus other club members more used to rather larger gauges!

We hope to put the Liphook club on the model railway map of West Sussex by attendance at this exhibition, amongst 15 layouts covering all the major gauges.

West Bay, 00 Gauge Layout by Graham Ashley, member of Liphook and District MRC

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Great News

This layout will be appearing at the Farnham and District MRC’s Annual Exhibition to be held at the Connaught Leisure Centre, Tongham Road, ALDERSHOT GU12 4AS, on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October 2007.

This is one of the premier exhibitions in the Surrey/Hampshire/West Sussex borders area and we believe it is the first time a member of the Liphook club has exhibited a layout at this show.
The layout will be operated by Graham and fellow members of the Liphook and District MRC and we look forward to meeting local railway modellers during the show.

Gauge 00 Layout – West Bay, by Graham Ashley

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Layout background

The layout, by Liphook and District MRC member Graham Ashley, is a representation of a contemporary terminus on the South West Trains network, that is also served by other train operating companies.

A small freight yard, some light engine movements and the occasional locomotive hauled replacement for a failed DMU service gives added interest.

The layout demonstrates how the careful use of commercial parts and rolling stock can create a convincing representation of Britain’s railways at the beginning of the 21st century.

Layout details

Size: 3965 (13′) x 305 (1′ ) of which 2440 (8′) is the scenic section- please allow 915 (3′) at rear for operators

Power supply: 1x13amp socket – no illuminated canopy

Insurance value: Please enquire

Exhibition expenses: Petrol only from Liss (Hampshire) for 2 cars

N scale layout- Cottleston Park

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Layout Basis

Having witnessed both the peaks and troughs of railway fortunes, Cottleston Park is depicted at a most interesting time. The station was built in late Victorian times as a terminus for the branch line from Shepards Milne, later expanded to also serve the newly developed suburb of the neighbouring town, named Cottleston Park, after the seat of a local landowner.

The architecture of the area was and still is, somewhat unremarkable; standard Victorian suburb with following styles “tacked-on” in a polyglot of very average British provincial appearance. The station was only noteworthy for its nearby sizable goods yard and motive power shed, long since gone, as are the station canopies which once adourned the terminal & through platforms.Where once steam engines were coaled and watered, is now a light industrial park; the pit of the removed turntable becoming a wetland habitat.

Remarkably, some of the original goods yard survives in much reduced circumstances, with a diesel fueling and servicing facility occupying part of the site. Cutting across the site is the reason for the goods yards fate- the urban ring road stuffed with heavy lorries.

One feature of the railway scene, unchanged since the line was built, is the fearsome 1 in 45 “Tygger Bank”, which was once the the burden of engine drivers and firemen with long unfitted freight trains in tow and still capable of giving modern diesels, checked by local signals, a bit of a fright, when called onto start with a heavy load.

Despite “Beeching” and various rationalisation schemes since, the branch line to Shepards Milne remains, operated by DMUs’ with an occasional freight run for a timber yard. To the hawk-eyed observer preservation society activity of ancient diesels and steam engines can be seen around the branch-will this become an early Community Railway?

After nearly 130 years Cottleston Park still has much railway activity; express trains, local stopping and branch line services; fast freight trains through to mainland Europe via the channel tunnel; light engine workings and even some shunting; all in a multiplicity of colourful liveries & types of stock and motive power to delight the casual observer and enthusiast alike.

Layout

Semi-urban U.K. based layout set in the period from the mid 1970′s to the present day, demonstrating a significant variety of both kit-built and ready-to-run locomotives and rolling stock.

Designed to entertain the exhibition visitor, Cottleston Park is a combination of both continuous run & fiddle yard to layout.

The extensive fiddle yard allows for a wide variety of of different trains to be assembled; the layout contains terminal passenger platforms and freight facilities, in addition to through running lines, the combination of which has potential for operating complexity and constant activity.

The layout was exhibited at the 2007 Midhurst Modellers Show & has invites for shows later this year & in 2008.

Gauge 00 Layout-Weyford on Sea -SR

Friday, May 4th, 2007

The layout represents a typical Southern Railway/BR Southern Region seaside terminus in the 1950′s, when most people went on their seaside holiday by train. The fictional location is on the Dorset Coast between Weymouth & Lyme Regis. It supposes that the L&SWR extended its line from Dorchester westwards to meet its West Country main line just east of Axminster, & built a branch line line down to Weyford on Sea which was fast becoming a holiday destination. The GWR also got in on the act with a branch of a branch to reach with running rights the L&SWR station close to the sea front.

In the 1930′s the Southern Railway built one of their art-deco stations with long covered platforms to accommodate holiday & excursion traffic on a grand scale. A small loco depot was also constructed, which later was “home” to many West Country locos before their return to Exmouth or Nine Elms.

The layout is L shape, Terminus to fiddle yard. The station has 4 platform faces & a goods yard with a goods shed & a wartime cold storage warehouse, based loosely on one that existed near Shalford Jct on the Portsmouth line- one of many built to disperse food stocks in time of war.

The loco depot has a turntable & a loco-shed to accomodate 4 express locos modelled in part low relief.

The layout has considerable potential for operation, particularly if using a sequence based around a Summer Saturday timetable of BR(S) in the 1950′s which is being developed.

The layout was exhibited in an incomplete form at our open day in 2005 & in a more complete form at the Midhurst Modellers Show in 2006.We hope to add a sea-front section including an esplanade & operating trams in the future.

Update 1:

To enable the layout to be operated in the temporary club room, plans are being developed to modify the layout to a U shape, with a new “Weyford Docks” station to hide the fiddle yard from public view.

To add to the fiction, Weyford Docks will be the Southern’s major railway to ship connection to the Channel Islands for both freight (mainly fresh vegetables and flowers) and passenger traffic.

This will add to the operating potential of the layout, with boat trains & seasonal perishable freight trains to be reformed in the main station with only smaller locos permitted on the docks branch.

The changes will involve the construction of five new 1,200 (4′) baseboard sections, the majority of which will require scenic treatment. Four existing baseboards will not be used in this format. The new track layout should still enable a loco turntable to be retained, but possibly a much truncated engine shed. The new layout size will be approx. 5.000 (16′) x 3.00 (10′) inclusive of operating space and access space at one end. Although the main operating panel will be inside the “U”, we expect to have the “Docks” panel on the front of that layout section.

No allowance has been made for barrier space in the sizes given.

The target is to have the layout complete in its revised format for the 2009 exhibition season of which the Feb.2009 Midhurst Modellers Show is part.

Update 2 -October 2008

The revised loco depot is virtually complete with track, electrics and scenics done.

The station approach pointwork has been modified to provide a separate “main line” to the fiddle yard and the docks branch. A board with the branch falling to the dock has been constructed, track laid and the scenics for the cutting well advanced.

The existing goods sidings have been cut back to allow for the docks branch. The government cold store building has been removed as there is insufficient space.

Three “new” 4′ boards are being constructed out of material re-used from some old boards to form the fiddle yard and dock area.

As soon as these are available, track laying in the fiddle yard will commence immediately.

The N gauge team have volunteered to assist with a range of tasks including scenery, operating sequence and electrics.

Work on refreshing the scenery and buildings on the “existing” section of the layout will commence immediately.

Gauge 0 Layout- Woodchurch GWR/SR

Friday, May 4th, 2007

The layout is a fictional station on the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton line which closed in the early 60′s

The layout is a fiddle yard to fiddle yard set up with a double track station area, with goods yard & local engine shed measuring 12.2 (40′) x 0.9 (3′) & constructed generally in 1.2m sections.

Potentially the layout can provide plenty of movement as the prototype line handled considerable quantities of military freight traffic & troop specials, particularly during the Second World War, post D-Day. In peace time traffic was a little sparce, with a branch line train service with the occassional inter-regional freight or passenger excursion train. As the line was single track for most of its length, with stations with long passing loops (considerably lengthened during WWII), this is reproduced on this layout. GWR & SR stock predominates amongst members stock, as it was on the prototype post war.

The layout was exhibited at the Midhurst Modellers Show in 2005 & at our Open Day later in the same year.

Currently the layout is in store awaiting the club’s return to permanent premises. We hope we can exhibit this layout in 2008.
